WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

goochCaitlin Gooch, women’s basketball – Caitlin was named MVP at this past weekend’s BOB FM Shootout. Gooch, a second year guard scored 42 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and came away with eight steals in the three games. Caitlin led the Wesmen to an impressive victory on Saturday against Regina scoring 22 points, including five-three pointers.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The Pembina Chrysler Invitational Men’s Basketball Tournament will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre on Friday October 12th and Saturday October 13th. The Men’s Basketball team will take on Fraser Valley and Concordia in the two day competition. Friday’s game against Fraser Valley will be broadcast live on 1290 CFRW with Paul Edmonds providing the play by play and Steve Thompson adding the color commentary. Tournament passes are available at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre for only $15.00. Please visit www.wesmen.ca for all the game results.

The University of Winnipeg and Pembina Chrysler present the 21st Annual Wesmen Basketball Coaches Clinic on Saturday October 13th. The cost of the clinic is $70.00 and includes six clinic presentations, a Pembina Chrysler Tournament pass (4 games), a Wesmen Athletic season pass and a lunch on Saturday. WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

Last Wednesday, four members of the Wesmen Basketball Teams started conducting player clinics at the Turtle Island Community Centre. The clinics will run every Wednesday until December and will be attended by several neighborhood children.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team saw their first game action this past weekend at the BOB FM Shootout. In Friday’s opening game against Lakehead University, the Wesmen were defeated 55-54 by the Thunderwolves. First year guard Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 11 points and third year guard Jessica Stromberg added a double-double finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. On Saturday, Caitlin Gooch led Winnipeg to a 57-54 victory over the Regina Cougars. Gooch scored a game high 22 points, including five three pointers to lead the Wesmen to their first win of the tournament. In Sunday’s final game Winnipeg came away with a 77-64 victory over their provincial rivals the Brandon Bobcats. First year guard Rosemary Mills led the team with 20 points. The Wesmen finished the three day tournament with a record of 2-1. Caitlin Gooch was named the tournament MVP and Amy Ogidan was named to the tournament all-star team.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Dave Crook and his talented squad will have a chance to show case their talents this weekend at the Pembina Chrysler Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen will take on former Wesmen Assistant Coach Barnaby Craddock and his Fraser Valley team on Friday. Winnipeg will wrap up the tournament against Concordia on Saturday. Game time both nights is 6:30 p.m.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Larry McKay and his team are currently on the road for six exhibition matches in three different cities. The team is taking on Dalhousie University in Halifax for three matches. The team dropped their opening match 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 33-31) Monday afternoon. Winnipeg will face Dalhousie on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to Montreal on Thursday for a match against the University of Montreal. The team will conclude their journey with a two match set against Laval in Quebec City on Friday and Saturday before heading back to Winnipeg.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her team have completed their pre-season schedule and anxiously awaiting the start of the 2007-08 Canada West regular season. The team will begin the regular season on the road against the UBC Thunderbirds on October 26-27 in Vancouver.
