GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The 2007 University of Winnipeg High School Girl’s Volleyball Tournament took place this past Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. The tournament featured 17 of the top high school girl’s teams from across Winnipeg and Manitoba. For the fifth consecutive year the team from Selkirk, coached by Rick Scott captured the gold medal by defeating Westwood in the gold medal match. The team from Oak Park took home the bronze medal on the “A side”. The Sisler Spartans were the champions on the “B side”. The MVP of the tournament was Meghan Cyr of Selkirk.

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen would like to congratulate former women’s basketball great Angela (Johnson) Straub for her upcoming induction into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. Straub, played five seasons with the Wesmen (1973-1977) and was named an all star on three occasions at the national University Championships.  She was also named Athlete of the Year four times at the University of Winnipeg and a GPAC All-Star in each year of her University career. Angela will officially be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame at the 28th Annual Induction dinner on Saturday, November 17th, 2007.

In conjunction with the University of Winnipeg's 40th birthday celebrations the Wesmen Family will be hosting a large family fun event. On Saturday September 15, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. The focus will be on FUN, FUN FUN and will feature
 - Alumni / Wesmen Volleyball Tournament
- Alumni / Wesmen 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament
- Fun Kid's activities for all ages
- Pizza – Pepsi – Prizes - Entertainment
- Opportunities for Sponsor Displays

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Dave Crook, entering his seventh season with the Wesmen is currently putting his squad thru the early stages of training camp. The team features many veterans and an impressive number of recruits and walk on hopefuls who will be looking for a spot on the 2007-08 team.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach and former Wesmen great Tanya McKay, entering her 12th season, is putting her team thru it’s daily practices in preparation for the 2007-08 season. The team will see its first action next week at the annual Intersquad game.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Larry McKay begins his 19th season with the Wesmen. The team with a good mixture of veterans and impressive recruits are currently going thru an intense training camp in preparation to defend its National Championship that was won last April in Hamilton. The team will be participating in the annual Intersquad match this Wednesday night at the Duckworth Centre.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach and former Wesmen standout Diane Scott entering her 13th season, is currently conducting the teams training camp in preparation for the upcoming 2007-08 season. Coach Scott has brought on board eight talented recruits who will mix in well with the returning players to form an exciting team this season. The team will take part in the annual Inters quad match this Wednesday evening.
