WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Mike James, men’s basketball – Mike scored 24 points (12.0 ppg) and hauled in nine rebounds (4.5 rpg) in the team’s two exhibition games against McMaster and Guelph over the weekend. In Saturday night’s contest against Guelph, James scored a team high 16 points and added six rebounds.
Randie Gibson, women’s basketball – Randie led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points, including six-three pointers and five assists in the teams 91-51 pre-season victory over the Royal Military College, Saturday night in Brandon.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
A special congratulations to former Wesmen basketball stars Sandra Carroll, Jeff Foreman and the 1992-93 to 1994-95 women’s basketball teams for their induction this past Saturday night into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.
It is that time of the year again, on Thursday November 1st the 17th annual Duckworth Challenge will take place at the University of Winnipeg. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will battle their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons. Once again fans can get their Bisons BBQ’ed, as Bison Burgers will be served hot off the grill from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m as you enter the Duckworth Centre. The volleyball portion of the competition will take place the following evening at the University of Manitoba.
Calling all basketball coaches….The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 16, 2007at the Duckworth Centre. WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
Members of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams conducting a clinic for children from the Rossbrook House this Saturday afternoon. The clinic will take place at the Victor Albert Elementary School. JoAnne Wells, Uzo Asagwara and Heather Thompson are some of the instructors confirmed for the clinic.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men’s team traveled to Southern Ontario for a pair of exhibition games against McMaster and Guelph this past Friday and Saturday night. In Friday’s opening game against McMaster, the Wesmen were defeated 78-77 in a close, hard fought game. Second year guard Nick Lother led the team with 21 points, followed by fifth year post Dan Shynkaryk, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. On Saturday the team struggled in an 84-60 loss to Guelph. Second year forward Mike James led the Wesmen with 16 points and six rebounds. Head Coach Dave Crook and his team will wrap up the pre season portion of their schedule with a home game this Thursday evening against RMC (Royal Military College). Game time at the Duckworth Centre is 7:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team hit the road this past Saturday night to Brandon to take part in the Brandon Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen were impressive defeating RMC (Royal Military College) 91-51. Four players scored in double digits with third year guard Randie Gibson leading the way with a game high 22 points, including six three-pointers. Alex MacIver was next with 14 points, first year guard Amy Ogidan had 11 points and Dawna Wright, in her first year from Ft.Lauderdale, Florida finished with 10 points. The team will wrap up their pre-season schedule on the road this week with a game against North Dakota and two games at the Mayville State Invitational Tournament.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Larry McKay and his team will begin defense of their CIS National Championship this week against UBC. The 2007-08 Canada West regular season begins with the team traveling to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
After a long month of practice and preparation, Head Coach Diane Scott and her team will kick off the 2007-08 Canada West regular season this Friday and Saturday against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. The team last saw match action at the Regina Invitational at the end of September.
