WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

JaymeJayme Menzies, women’s volleyball – Jayme showed her versatility this past weekend at the University of Regina Invitational. Jayme, in her fourth year was used in the right side and setter positions during the three day tournament.

dasDustin Addison- Schneider, men’s volleyball – Dustin helped lead the Wesmen to a weekend sweep against the Regina Cougars. Addison-Schneider entering his fifth year of eligibility was consistent in both matches in leading the Wesmen attack.




WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

Starting Wed Oct 3rd, four members of the Wesmen Basketball Teams will be conducting player clinics every Wednesday night at the Turtle Island Community Centre. The clinic will be attended by several neighborhood children.

Our very own Wes Lee Coyote made an appearance this morning at the MTS Centre in conjunction with the Creative Retirement’s Annual Seniors and Elders Day. Wes Lee spent the morning greeting all those attending.

On Thur Oct. 4th, members of the Wesmen basketball teams will be participating in UWSA Freestyle Event. The Wesmen players will be participating in the Basketball Basic Workshop featuring playing skills, warm up & cool down routines and proper “game day” nutrition. GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The BOB FM Shoot-Out Women’s Basketball tournament will be taking place this weekend at the Duckworth Centre. The host Wesmen will be challenging universities from Lakehead, Regina and Brandon. Tournament passes are only $15.00 and are available at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre. Please log on to www.wesmen.ca for the tournament draw and results.

The University of Winnipeg and Pembina Chrysler present the 21st Annual Wesmen Basketball Coaches Clinic on Saturday October 13th. The cost of the clinic is $70.00 and includes six clinic presentations, a Pembina Chrysler Tournament pass (4 games), a Wesmen Athletic season pass and lunch. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her team headed to Regina to take part in the University of Regina Invitational Tournament this past weekend. The team finished with an overall record of 2-3 and finished third in their pool and in sixth place overall. In Friday’s opening match Manitoba defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17). Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 12 kills and eight defensive digs. The team rebounded in the evening draw, defeating Brandon 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13). First year outside Karen Montgomery had an outstanding match leading the Wesmen with 19 kills. On Saturday the Wesmen were defeated in the morning draw 3-0 (29-27, 25-10, 25-15) by Alberta. Dirks led the team with 14 kills. The team regrouped and were victorious in the evening semi-final match sweeping Simon Fraser 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-21). Libero Shanti Plett finished with 11 defensive digs and middle Dayna Kiesman had six blocks. In the teams final round match on Sunday the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (20-25, 25-14, 27-25, 20-25, 15-6) in a hard fought match. Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 19 kills. First year middle Lauren Sears had a strong match with seven kills and two blocks. The team will now prepare for the start of the 2007-08 regular season on Oct 26 & 27 when they travel to Vancouver to take on UBC,

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The men’s team played host to the Regina Cougars in a two match exhibition series. On Friday, the team was presented with their championship rings and raided the banner as the 2006-07 National Champions. After the ceremony, the Wesmen went on to defeat Regina 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22). Dustin Addison-Schneider was steady in setting up the Wesmen attack. On Saturday, the team earned a hard fought 3-2 (25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-27, 15-11) decision over the Cougars. Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with a match high 13 kills. Ben Schellenberg and Ryan DeBruyn were next with seven kills each. The team will travel to Laval, Quebec to take part in the Laval Invitational on October 12-13th.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay is busy getting her squad ready for this weeks BOB FM Shootout at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen will open the tournament against Lakehead on Friday night followed by a game Saturday against Regina. The Wesmen will wrap up the tournament against Brandon on Sunday afternoon.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Dave Crook is anxious to see how his new and talented team will do in game action. Coach Crook will have that chance on October 12 & 13 when the Wesmen take part in the Pembina Chrysler Invitational. The Wesmen will open up the tournament against Fraser Valley on Friday and battle Concordia on Saturday night.
