WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Jayme Menzies, women’s volleyball – Jayme in her fourth season had a solid weekend helping the Wesmen to a weekend sweep against Simon Fraser. Jayme, playing in the setter position finished the weekend with 54 set assists, three kills, and eight defensive digs.
Jon Kasdorf, men’s volleyball - Jon, a second year libero played a big part in the team’s weekend sweep against Trinity Western. In Friday’s match, Jon led the Wesmen with a match high 13 defensive digs and was solid in service reception.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS:
The 41st Annual MTS Wesmen Classic will be taking place on Dec.27-30 at the Duckworth Centre. Tournament passes are available at Duckworth Customer Service Centre for only $20.00. For more information or to purchase your tickets by phone please call 786-9349. In conjunction with the Classic the following events will be held at the Duckworth Centre:
The Winnipeg Free Press Community Classic will be taking place from Dec. 3 -6.
The Converse Jr.Varsity Classic will take place on Fri. Dec 7th and Sat. Dec. 8th.
The Flanders Insurance HS Girl’s Classic will be played from Mon, Dec 10 - Wed Dec 12.
The International Basketball Classic will be taking place from Fri. Dec 14 – Sun. Dec16th.
Congratulations to first year men’s volleyball player Emory Wells for being named as one of the recipients of the CAP (Congress of Aboriginal Peoples) Aboriginal Youth Achievement Award in the sports category.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The second ranked men’s volleyball team had a great weekend winning both matches against a tough Trinity Western University team. In Friday’s match Winnipeg lost the opening set but went on to win three in a row in a 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 25-17) victory. Alan Ahow led Winnipeg with 12 kills, followed by Ryan DeBruyn, who finished the match with 11 kills on 13 attempts. Jon Kasdorf had a match high 13 defensive digs in the libero position. On Saturday Winnipeg completed the weekend sweep with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-20) win. Ben Schellenberg had a match high 14 kills and 12 defensive digs. Andrew Town was next with 10 kills. Setter Dustin Addison Schneider was a serving machine finishing with a match high five service aces. The Wesmen will head into the holiday break with a record of 6-2. The team’s next action is on Jan. 4-5 when they travel to Thompson Rivers to take on the Wolfpack.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Diane Scott and her team hit the win column in the regular season with a pair of victories over Simon Fraser. On Friday the Wesmen were impressive in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) sweep over the Clan. Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 12 kills. First year middle Lauren Sears had an all-round great match finishing with six kills, two aces and three digs. On Saturday night the Wesmen completed the weekend sweep with another 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-19) sweep. Nicola Dirks led the team with 13 kills. Lauren Sears finished with seven kills and four blocks. Dayna Kiesman had a very strong serving match collecting six service aces. Player of the week, Jayme Menzies had 31 assists to go along with two defensive digs. The Wes men now sport a record of 2-6 and will close out the first half the season with a pair of matches against Trinity Western on Friday and Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 7:00 p.m. on both nights.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men’s team was able to gain a split in their weekend games against Trinity Western and Simon Fraser on the road in British Columbia. On Friday the Wesmen defeated Trinity Western 89-82. The team connected on 52% of their shots from the field. Errant Nasajpour led Winnipeg with 26 points and added four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Matt Opalko contributed on both ends of the court finishing with 17 points, four rebounds and six assists. On Saturday, Winnipeg dropped an 82-73 decision to Simon Fraser. Erfan Nasajpour led the team with 25 points, six rebounds and six assists. Peter Lomuro had his best game of the season finishing with 17 points. Winnipeg now sports a record of 4-4 and will open up a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats starting on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre at 8:00 p.m. The game will be carried live on 1290 CFRW. The two teams will meet in Brandon on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women’s team had a tough weekend dropping both games on the road in British Columbia. On Friday night the Wesmen were beaten 73-67 by Trinity Western in a close game. Second year guard Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 20 points, including three-three pointers. Dawna Wright had 15 points and six rebounds. On Saturday the Wesmen were defeated 91-53 by the number one ranked Simon Fraser. First year guard Amy Ogidan led the team in scoring with 18 points, followed by Catie Gooch’s nine points. The two losses drop the team’s record to 2-6. The Wesmen will open up a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m. The two teams will meet in Brandon on Saturday with the tip off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
