WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

amy powAmy Ogidan, women’s basketball – Amy, a first year player from Oak Park led the Wesmen in scoring in a two game series in Regina. Ogidan scored 26 points (13.0 ppg), hauled in seven rebounds, and finished with a pair of steals against the Cougars. Amy averaged 28 minutes of playing time in the two games.

ben powBen Schellenberg, men’s volleyball – Ben earns his second straight Player of the Week after leading the Wesmen to a weekend split against the number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears. Schellenberg totaled 35 kills, 16 digs, and five blocks in the two matches. In Saturday’s match Ben finished with a match high 20 kills.




GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

Attention all basketball coaches, it is not too late to register for The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 16th, 2007 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic begins at 9:00 a.m and will feature eight clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletics Season Pass and lunch. Please register on-line at www.wesmen.ca. The University of Winnipeg Wesmen would like to congratulate former women’s basketball great Angela (Johnson) Straub who will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame this coming Saturday night at the annual induction ceremony. Straub, played five seasons with the Wesmen (1973-1977) and was named an all star on three occasions at the national University Championships.  She was also named Athlete of the Year four times at the University of Winnipeg and a GPAC All-Star in each year of her University career.

The International Basketball Classic will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre on December 14 - December 16th, 2007. This tournament is open to all grades 3-12 club teams across Canada and the United States. MEN’S BASKETBALL

The men’s team was on the road this past weekend for a series against the Regina Cougars in Regina. The Wesmen played hard but were defeated both nights by the Cougars. In Friday’s opening game, Regina defeated Winnipeg 86-75. Fifth year forward Matt Opalko led Winnipeg with 16 points, including a pair of three pointers. Erfan Nasajpour finished with 15 points and added a team high four steals. On Saturday night Regina completed the weekend sweep with a 101-85 victory. Erfan Nasajpour had his best game of the season finishing with a team high 32 points, including six three pointers. The two losses on the weekend leaves Winnipeg with a record of 2-2 in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference. The Wesmen (2-2)  will host UBC (5-1) on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. the game will be carried live on 1290 CFRW. The Wesmen will also play Victoria (5-1) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team were defeated on Friday and Saturday by the Regina Cougars in Regina. On Friday night the Wesmen were defeated 76-51 in the series opener. First year players Dawna Wright and Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 13 points each. Wright also added five rebounds, two blocks and three steals. On Saturday the team dropped an 82-57 decision to the Cougars. Ogidan led Winnipeg with 13 points. Wright was the only other Wesmen player in double digits finishing with 12 points. The Wesmen were playing with a short lineup with three players felled by injuries. Winnipeg now has a record of 1-3 in the regular season. Winnipeg will face UBC (5-1) on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday the Wesmen will face Victoria (3-3) at 2:00 p.m.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The number two ranked Wesmen hosted a weekend series against the number one ranked Alberta Golden Bears in a rematch of last season’s National Championship Gold Medal match. The Wesmen got off to a great start on Friday night sweeping Alberta 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23). Fifth year outside and team captain Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with a match high 15 kills and three blocks. In Saturday’s finale the Golden Bears earned a weekend split with a hard fought 3-1 (25-23, 28-30, 25-15, 28-26) victory over the Wesmen. Ben Schellenberg and Andrew Town each had a match high 20 kills to lead the Wesmen. The weekend split leaves Winnipeg with a record of 4-2 in the Canada West Conference standings. The team will have the bye this week and will prepare to host Trinity Western for two matches on November 23 & 24th at the Duckworth Centre.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her team had the bye this past week. The Wesmen (0-4) have been preparing and practicing hard all week for their upcoming matches this week on Friday and Saturday in Calgary against the Calgary Dinos (4-0).
