LEA MARC PRINTING WESMEN ATHLETES OF THE MONTH (NOVEMBER)
Ben Schellenberg, men’s volleyball – Ben, a fifth year opposite and team captain was named the University of Winnipeg Male Athlete of the Week for two consecutive weeks (Nov.5-11 & Nov. 12-18). Schellenberg led the second ranked Wesmen to a 5-1 record in the month of November. Ben finished the month averaging 14.6 kills per match, 7.5 defensive digs and 3.0 blocks. Ben is currently ranked seventh in hitting % (.370) and fifth in kills per match (3.72 kpm) in the Canada West Conference.
Amy Ogidan, women’s basketball - Amy, a first year guard had an outstanding month for a first year player. Ogidan was named University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Week for two consecutive weeks ( Nov.12 -18 & Nov. 19-25). Amy averaged 13.0 ppg, five rebounds and 28 minutes played per game. Amy is currently ranked 16th in Canada West Conference scoring with 13.3 ppg.
WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Catie Gooch, women’s basketball – Catie had an outstanding weekend in leading the Wesmen to a two game sweep against the Brandon Bobcats. Gooch, a second year guard scored 49 points (24.5 ppg), sank seven-three pointers, and was perfect from the free throw line going 16-for-16.
Ben Kingdon, men’s basketball – Ben, a first year post from Oak Park showed his potential in a two game series against the Brandon Bobcats. On Thursday night, Kingdon had his best game of his young career finishing with 14 points and 17 rebounds in 23 minutes of playing time.

The 41ST Annual MTS Wesmen Classic will be taking place from December 27-30 at the Duckworth Centre. The tournament will feature eight of the top men’s high school teams in Winnipeg and eight teams from Canadian Universities including our very own Winnipeg Wesmen. WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
The Winnipeg Free Press Community Classic begins this evening at the Duckworth Centre. The tournament will feature 24 boys and girls teams ranging in age from 11-14 years of age. The tournament will run until Thursday evening, with the finals being held on Wed. Dec. 27th.
The Winnipeg Wesmen will be hosting the Manitoba Public Insurance Volleyball Clinic on Friday December 14 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic will be led by 10 Wesmen Volleyball Team members (5 men, 5 women). 60 participants from local junior high schools will be in attendance.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women’s team ended their first half schedule with a pair of wins over the Brandon Bobcats. On Thursday at the Duckworth Centre the Wesmen came away with a 75-60 victory. Catie Gooch scored a game high 28 points, including four three pointers and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. On Saturday the Wesmen made it two in a row with a 72-63 victory in Brandon. Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 21 points. The two wins push the team’s record to 4-6. The Wesmen will travel to Minot, North Dakota for the Minot State Invitational at the end of December before resuming their Canada West regular season schedule on January 3rd when they host the University of Manitoba Bisons.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men’s team completed their first half Canada West regular season schedule with a pair of games against their arch rivals the Brandon Bobcats. On Thursday in Winnipeg, the Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 87-68. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 20 points and first year post Ben Kingdon collected a double-double, 14 points and 17 rebounds. The two teams met each other in Brandon on Saturday night. The Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 82-68. Matt Opalko led Winnipeg with 21 points. The Wesmen will head to the Christmas break with a 4-6 record. The team will next see action at the end of December in the 41st Annual Wesmen Classic.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Diane Scott and her team played hosts to the Trinity Western University Spartans. In Friday’s opening match the Wesmen were defeated 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 25-27, 25-23). Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 16 kills and Shanti Plett was the leader on defense with 22 digs. On Saturday the team played a great match but fell 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16) to the Spartans. Nicola Dirks had a match high 20 kills to lead the Wesmen. Dayna Kiesman had a great match finishing with eight kills and eight blocks. The loss drops the team’s record to 2-8. The team will now break until January 4th when they travel to Thompson Rivers for a weekend series.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The men’s team is currently enjoying the holiday break as their first half Canada West regular season schedule is complete. The team is ranked second in the country with an impressive 6-2 record. The team will travel to Thompson Rivers to kick off their second half schedule at the beginning of January.
