WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Nicola Dirks, women’s volleyball – Nicola started the 2007-08 regular season where she ended last season. Dirks finished with 21 kills, 20 defensive digs and three service aces in the teams two match series against UBC. In Saturday’s match Dirks finished with 12 kills and had a hitting efficiency of 30%.
Ryan DeBruyn, men’s volleyball – Ryan, a third year middle blocker provided steady play in helping the Wesmen to a weekend split against UBC. DeBruyn finished the weekend with 13 kills, nine blocks and two service aces. DeBruyn was impressive in Friday’s match finishing with eight kills and a hitting efficiency of 78%.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
It is that time of the year again, on Thursday November 1st the 17th annual Duckworth Challenge will take place at the University of Winnipeg. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will battle their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons. Once again fans can get their Bisons BBQ’ed, as Bison Burgers will be served hot off the grill from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m as you enter the Duckworth Centre. A bison burger and a Pepsi combo will be available for only $3.00. The volleyball portion of the competition will take place the following evening at the University of Manitoba.
Calling all basketball coaches….The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 16, 2007at the Duckworth Centre. Please note that due to the Annual Santa Claus Parade, the men’s and women’s basketball games on Saturday, November 17th will now begin at 2:00 p.m. (women’s game) and 4:00 p.m. (men’s game).
The University of Winnipeg will be presenting the Radisson Women in Sport Breakfast on Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 from 7:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg 288 Portage Avenue. MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The men’s volleyball team opened up the Canada West regular season with a weekend split against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. In Friday’s match the Wesmen downed UBC 3-2 (17-25, 27-25, 25-19, 14-25, 19-17) in a thrilling match. Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen attack with 16 kills. Ryan DeBruyn finished with a hitting efficiency of 78% in the match. On Saturday, UBC came back from 0-2 deficit to defeat the Wesmen 3-2 (19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-15). Andrew Town led Winnipeg with 17 kills. Middle blocker Justin Duff was a force at the net finishing with 10 blocks. The Wesmen (1-1) will next see action on Friday evening when they travel across town to face the University of Manitoba Bisons (0-0) in the volleyball portion of the 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The women’s volleyball team opened up the Canada West regular season with two defeats to the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. In Friday’s opener the Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19). Nicola Dirks and first year middle Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with nine kills each. Dirks led Winnipeg defensively with 12 digs. On Saturday the Wesmen played a better match in a 3-0 loss (25-18, 25-19, 25-12).Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 12 kills and shared the team high in digs with first year player Karen Montgomery, each finishing with eight digs. Marlee Bragg made her return to the court on Saturday following a serious knee injury that forced Bragg to miss 17 matches last season. Bragg finished with four kills and four digs.The Wesmen (0-2) will next see action on Friday night as they take on the undefeated (2-0) University of Manitoba Bisons at the University of Manitoba in the volleyball portion of the 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women’s basketball team wrapped up their preseason with three games in North Dakota. On Thursday in Grand Forks the Wesmen dropped a 94-43 decision to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Kaitlin Rempel led the team with 10 points. On Friday, Winnipeg traveled to the Mayville State Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen opened up the tournament with a 61-50 victory over Jamestown College. Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 20 points. In Saturday’s final game the host Mayville State beat Winnipeg 71-55. First year guard Dawna Wright led the team with 12 points. The team will now prepare for their Canada West regular season opener on Thursday when they play host to the Manitoba Bisons at the Duckworth Centre in the basketball portion of the 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men’s team was scheduled to play RMC (Royal Military College) in an exhibition contest last Thursday, but the game was cancelled to due campus commitments for RMC. The team will host the University of Manitoba Bisons in their Canada West regular season opener on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre in the basketball portion of the 17th Annual Duckworth Challenge. Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m. and the game will be live on 1290 CFRW starting with the pre-game show at 7:45 p.m.
