WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Richard Wiebe, men’s volleyball - Richard played a big role in helping the Wesmen open up the regular season with a weekend sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds. Wiebe, a fifth year outside was solid in both matches but on Saturday he led the team with 20 kills and had an attack percentage of .667.
Marlee Bragg, women’s volleyball - Marlee, last season’s Canada West Rookie of the Year helped the Wesmen to a weekend split with the UBC Thunderbirds. Bragg, had 21 kills and 17 defensive digs and four blocks in the two matches over the weekend.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
The Wesmen welcomed the Manitoba Foster Family Network as their special guests at Friday’s volleyball match against UBC.
At this past Saturday’s volleyball match, the Wesmen welcomed several teams who were in attendance for the annual"Volleyball Uniform Giveaway Night". Congratulations to the team from Elmwood who won a set of volleyball uniforms compliments of Saxon Athletics, Winnipeg Outfitters and the University of Winnipeg.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Men’s Volleyball team opened up the Canada West regular season in great fashion by sweeping the UBC Thunderbirds on both nights. In Friday’s match the Wesmen downed UBC 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen attack with 13 kills and four defensive digs. On Saturday, Winnipeg completed the weekend sweep as they beat the T-Birds 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 25-18). Richard Wiebe led the Wesmen with a match-high 20 kills while Schellenberg and Martin Rochon each had 12 kills in the victory. The Wesmen start the 2006-07 season at 2-0 and will next see action on Friday evening when they travel across town to face the University of Manitoba Bisons .
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Women’s Volleyball team opened up the Canada West regular season with a weekend split against the UBC Thunderbirds. In Friday’s opener the Wesmen were defeated 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 28-26, 25-18). Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 18 kills. On Saturday the Wesmen rebounded by sweeping the T-Birds 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-22). Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 19 kills and 11 digs and Marlee Bragg contributed with 10 kills and seven defensive digs. The team now sports a 1-1 regular season record and will next see action on Friday night as they take on the number one ranked Manitoba Bisons at the University of Manitoba.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Men’s Basketball team wrapped up their pre-season at this past weekend’s Manitoba Invitational Tournament. On Friday the Wesmen overcame a 12 point defecit to defeat University of Mary 63-49. The Wesmen outscored Mary 42-16 in the second half. Ivan Saric led the Wesmen with 16 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Roper and Dan Shynkaryk scored 12 points apiece. In Saturday’s game the Wesmen fell behind as they were defeated by Western Ontario 87-73. Erfan Nasajpour had 25 points to lead the Wesmen. Ryan Roper once again was steady scoring 14 points. The Wesmen finish the pre-season with a respectable 5-2 record and will now prepare to face the Manitoba Bisons in their Canada West regular season opener on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m. and the game will be live on 1290 CFRW.
WOMEN’S BASKETBAL
The Women’s Basketball team wrapped up their preseason with a pair of games against the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. On Saturday the Wesmen were defeated 81-70 with Uzo Asagwara leading the team with 19 points. On Sunday the Wesmen were looking for revenge but once again were on the losing side falling to Mary 79-65. Asagwara led the Wesmen with 16 points. The team will now prepare for the Canada West regular season opener on Thursday when they play host to the Manitoba Bisons at the Duckworth Centre. Tip-off is at 6:15 p.m.
