WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Nicola Dirks, women’s volleyball - Nicola was named a tournament all-star at this past weekend’s Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. The fourth year left side provided solid play for the Wesmen all weekend. In the last three matches she averaged 18 kills/per match including 23 kills vs Toronto on Saturday night.

Ben Schellenberg, men’s volleyball - Ben was a force in the team’s two matches against the defending national champions Trinity Western University Spartans. Schellenberg had a match high 23 kills in the first match on Friday night.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The BOB FM Shoot-Out Women’s Basketball tournament will be taking place this weekend at the Duckworth Centre. The host Wesmen will be challenging universities from Lakehead, Calgary and Ottawa. Tournament passes are only $15.00 and are available at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre. Please log on to www.wesmen.ca for tournament draw and results.

The University of Winnipeg and Midway Chrysler present the 20th Annual Wesmen Basketball Coaches Clinic on Wednesday October 18th - Saturday October 21st. The cost of the clinic is $70.00 and includes seven clinic presentations, a Midway Chrysler Tournament pass (4 games), a Wesmen Athletic season pass and a lunch on Friday. WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

Wesmen men’s basketball captain Erfan Nasajpour was a guest speaker last Wednesday evening with children involved in the ROUTE program. The ROUTE program is a program designed for refugee children new to Canada. Erfan spoke about the importance of an education, reaching goals and being a productive member in society.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Women’s Team won the bronze medal at this past weekend’s LEA MARC Women’s Volleyball Challenge. Head Coach Diane Scott and her team finished the round robin portion with a record of 2-2, with victories over Manitoba and Toronto. The 2-2 record put the Wesmen in third place and a spot in the bronze medal match against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The Wesmen coming off two big wins the previous day beat the Varsity Blues in three sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-23). Nicola Dirks had a match high 18 kills in the bronze medal match. Dirks, was named a tournament all-star for her outstanding play at the three day tournament. The team will now prepare for the opening of the 2006-07 Canada West regular season on Oct. 27-28 when the Wesmen play host to the UBC Thunderbirds.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Men’s Team played host to the Trinity Western University Spartans in a two match exhibition series. In Friday’s opening match Trinity Western defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 25-16, 18-25, 15-10) in a highly entertaining match. Ben Schellenberg had a match high 23 kills for the Wesmen. On Saturday the team rebounded and defeated the defending national champions 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 28-26). Richard Wiebe led the team with a match high 12 kills and Martin Rochon contributed six service aces. The team will continue their pre-season schedule on October 12-14 when they take part in the University of Regina Invitational Tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Women’s team won the annual Alumni Challenge by defeating the Alumni 81-56 last Wednesday night. The Alumni team featured former Wesmen players such as Heather Thompson, Melanie Talastas and Erin Soroko. Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with 32 points, while Soroko had 12 points for the Alumni. Head Coach Tanya McKay is getting her team ready as they will participate in this weekends BOB FM Shootout at the Duckworth Centre.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Coach Dave Crook saw some good things from his team as they defeated the Wesmen Alumni 89-80 in the annual Alumni Game. First year forward Mike James led the Wesmen with 11 pts. Steve Newton led the Alumni team with a game high 17 points. The team will be busy practicing this week as they travel to Kingston, Ontario to participate in the Kingston Invitational Tournament on October 13-14.
