, men’s volleyball - Alan a third year outside hitter played a big part in helping the Wesmen finish with a perfect 4-0 record at this past weekend’s Regina Invitational Tournament. Ahow was solid all weekend highlighted by contributing 21 kills in a match against Regina and 18 kills against Calgary.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
The annual Midway Chrysler Invitational Men’s Basketball Tournament will be taking place this Friday and Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre. The host Wesmen will be challenging teams from Lakekead University and Jamestown College. On Friday night Winnipeg school patrols and their families will be special guests of the Wesmen.

The University of Winnipeg and Midway Chrysler present the 20th Annual Wesmen Basketball Coaches Clinic on Wednesday October 18th - Saturday October 21st. The cost of the clinic is $70.00 and includes seven clinic presentations, a Midway Chrysler Tournament pass (4 games), a Wesmen Athletic season pass and a lunch on Friday. The University of Winnipeg will be presenting the Radisson Women in Sport Breakfast on Tuesday, December 5th, 2006 from 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg 288 Portage Avenue. MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Men’s Volleyball team finished in first place at this past weekend’s Regina Invitational Tournament in Regina. The Wesmen were the only unbeaten team finishing with a perfect 4-0 record. In Thursday’s opening match the Wesmen defeated the host Regina 3-1 (25-18, 27-25, 20-25, 27-25). Wesmen player of the week, Alan Ahow had 21 kills to lead the Wesmen. On Friday the Wesmen pulled out a tough 3-2 win (25-20, 25-16, 15-25, 22-25, 15-12) over Brandon. Marty Rochon led the Wesmen with 15 kills. In Saturday’s early match Winnipeg defeated Calgary 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 15-6). Ben Schellenberg had 27 kills to pace the Wesmen and first year setter Dan Lother made his first ever CIS start and was superb. The Wesmen made it a perfect 4-0 by defeating Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17). Marty Rochon and Richard Wiebe had 14 and 12 kills respectively to lead the team. Head Coach Larry McKay and his team will next see action at this weekend’s Bison Invitational where they will take on teams from Dalhousie, Manitoba, Ryerson and Alberta. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Diane Scott and her team have completed their pre-season schedule. The team is now practicing hard both on and off the court in preparation for the opening of the 2006-07 Canada West regular season on Oct. 27-28 when the Wesmen play host to the UBC Thunderbirds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Dave Crook and his squad hit the court their first CIS game action at the Kingston Invitational Tournament in Kingston, Ontario. The Wesmen opened up the tournament on Friday against RMC and came away with an impressive 72-62 victory. Erfan Nasajpour had 17 points. Fourth year post Dan Shynkaryk had a double-double finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. On Saturday the Wesmen dropped a 76-67 decision to Queen’s. The team fell behind by as much as 20 points and could not recover. Nasajpour once again led the team with 25 points. The Wesmen will next see action this weekend as they host the Midway Chrysler Invitational Tournament. Winnipeg faces Lakehead University on Friday and Jamestown College on Saturday. Tip off for both evenings is 6:15 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team are busy preparing for their next preseason games coming up on Saturday October 28 and Saturday October 29 when the team travels to Bismarck, North Dakota to take on the University of Mary. The Wesmen will open up the regular season on Thursday, November 2nd as they play host to their cross-town rivals the University of Manitoba Bisons.
