WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Erfan Nasajpour, men’s basketball - Erfan, the heart and soul of the Wesmen, played a vital role in helping the Wesmen open up the regular season with a split against the Manitoba Bisons. Nasajpour averaged 22.5 points in the two games, including 32 points in Saturday’s 83-65 victory at the University of Manitoba.
Uzo Asagwara, women’s basketball - Uzo, last seasons CIS scoring leader began the regular season with a bang. Asagwara averaged 30 points in the two games against the Manitoba Bisons. In Saturday’s game Asagwara scored 37 points in a 72-70 loss to the Bisons.

The University of Winnipeg will be presenting the Radisson Women in Sport Breakfast on Tuesday, December 5th, 2006 from 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg 288 Portage Avenue. WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
The Wesmen would like to thank the community for their great support they showed at this past Thursday evening's Wesmen Basketball Regular Season Home Opener against the Manitoba Bisons. The Duckworth Centre was packed with hundreds of children from basketball teams from across the city.
At this past Thursday’s basketball game, the Wesmen welcomed several teams who were in attendance for the annual "Basketball Uniform Giveaway Night". Congratulations to the team from MBCI who won a set of basketball uniforms compliments of Saxon Athletics, Winnipeg Outfitters and the University of Winnipeg.
The Wesmen would like to express a big thank you to those individuals and corporations who have helped raise over $40,000 for the Athletic Scholarship Fund. For those who would like donate or for more information please contact Athletic Director Bill Wedlake at 786-9419.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Men’s team opened up the 2006-07 regular season with a home and home series against their cross town rivals the University of Manitoba Bisons. In Thursday’s opening game at the Duckworth Centre, the Bison’s beat the Wesmen 54-52. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 16 points and Ivan Saric was a monster on the boards grabbing 17 rebounds. On Saturday the team traveled south to the University of Manitoba and came out with an impressive 83-65 victory. Erfan Nasajpour was on fire scoring 32 points. The Wesmen have a regular season record of 1-1 and will host the Regina Cougars in a weekend series beginning Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. The game on Friday will be carried live on 1290 CFRW. Tip off is at 8:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Tanya McKay and the Women’s team opened up the regular season with two games against the University of Manitoba Bisons. On Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre, the Wesmen played a solid game beating the Bisons 85-65. Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with 23 points and Jessica Stromberg had her best game as a Wesmen scoring 17 points and adding 10 rebounds. In Saturday’s game at the University of Manitoba, Asagwara scored 37 points in a heart wrenching 72-70 loss to the Bisons. The Wesmen’s record now stands at 1-1 and will next host the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off on both nights is at 6:15 p.m.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Men’s team continued their impressive play as they knocked off the third ranked Manitoba Bisons 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23) last Friday night at the University of Manitoba. The Wesmen came into the match ranked number five in the country. The Wesmen earned the victory with a total team effort as four players had 10 or more kills in the match. Andrew Town and Richard Wiebe led the way with 11 kills each, and Ben Schellenberg and Martin Rochon each had 10 kills. The Wesmen sport a perfect 3-0 regular season record and will travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Golden Bears in a series on Friday and Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Women’s team suffered a tough 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 32-30) loss to the top ranked University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at the University of Manitoba. Fourth year left side Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with a match high 22 kills. Second year libero Shanti Plett led on the team defensively with 13 digs. The loss drops the team’s record to 1-2 and they will look to improve on that when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas on Friday and Saturday night.
