WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Erfan Nasajpour, men’s basketball - Erfan played a huge role in helping the Wesmen gain a weekend split with the Regina Cougars. In Saturday’s game Erfan scored a game high 29 points, including 11 points in overtime as the Wesmen defeated Regina 78-68. Nasajpour totaled 43 points, 11 assists, 15 rebounds and 12 steals in the two games.
Nicola Dirks, women’s volleyball - Nicola, a fourth year LS/RS was at the top of her game in two weekend matches against the Alberta Pandas. The captain of the Wesmen Women’s Volleyball team had a total of 45 kills and 21 defensive digs in the two matches. In Saturday’s match Dirks was superb finishing with a match high 29 kills and an attack percentage of 0.510%.

Calling all basketball coaches….The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 24th, 2006 at the Duckworth Centre. The University of Winnipeg will be presenting the Radisson Women in Sport Breakfast on Tuesday, December 5th, 2006 from 7:15 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg 288 Portage Avenue. The International Basketball Classic will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre on December 15 - December 17th, 2006. This tournament is open to all grades 3-12 club teams across Canada and the United States. The Winnipeg Wesmen will be hosting the Manitoba Public Insurance Volleyball Clinic on Friday December 15 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic will be led by Wesmen Volleyball Team members. Participants from local junior high schools will be in attendance.
MEN’S BASKETBAL
The Men’s team battled the Regina Cougars in a weekend series at the Duckworth Centre. In Friday’s opening game the Wesmen struggled in an 82-64 loss. Dan Shynkaryk led the team with 17 points and Erfan Nasajpour scored 14 points in a losing cause. On Saturday the team rebounded with a thrilling 78-68 overtime victory. Erfan Nasajpour, who had a game high 29 points, hit a floating jumper with four seconds left to force the game into extra time. In overtime Nasajpour scored 11 points to carry the Wesmen to the victory. The Wesmen sport a 2-2 record and will head out to British Columbia to face the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and the Victoria Vikes on Saturday night.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Women’s team improved their record to 3-1 with a weekend sweep against the Regina Cougars. On Friday the team connected on eight three pointers to propel them to an 84-71 victory. Caitlin Gooch, who made her first ever CIS start, connected on 4-of-5 three point shots in the first half. Stefanie Timmersman had her best game so far this season finishing with 22 points. On Saturday the Wesmen received a total team effort in downing the Cougars 83-73. Uzo Asagwra led the way with 23 points and Jessica Stromberg was on fire scoring 20 points, including five-three pointers. The team will head out to British Columbia to face the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and the Victoria Vikes on Saturday night.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Larry McKay and his third ranked team traveled to Alberta to tackle the second ranked Alberta Golden Bears. On Friday the team suffered its first regular season loss of the season as Alberta swept the Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20). Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 11 kills and Richard Wiebe was next with eight kills. In Saturday’s match the team played better but was defeated 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19). Schellenberg once again led the way with 18 kills. The team now sports a record of 3-2 and will have the bye this week. The team travels to Langley, B.C. in two weeks to take on the top team in the country the Trinity Western University Spartans.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Women’s team ventured to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas. In Friday’s opening match the team put in a great effort in a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18) loss to Alberta. Nicola Dirks led the way with a match high 16 kills and 14 digs. Jayme Menzies had 11 kills. On Saturday the team played hard but was defeated 3-1 (25-12, 20-25, 25-21, 28-26). Nicola Dirks had a great match finishing with a match high 29 kills to lead the Wesmen. The team now has a record of 1-4 on the season. The Wesmen will host the Calgary Dinos this weekend at the Duckworth Centre on Friday and Saturday.
