GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Matt Opalko, men’s basketball - Matt was the hardest working player for the Wesmen during the 39th Annual MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic. Matt was named a Tournament All-Star as he scored 34 points, grabbed 25 rebounds and had six steals for the Wesmen in three games.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen would like to thank all the sponsors, athletes, coaches and fans for making the 39th Annual MTS Mobility Classic a huge success once again. In the month of December 124 teams and 1800 participants ranging in age from Grade 3 to university embarked on the Duckworth Centre to participate in the Classic.

The main section of the Classic held from Dec 27 - 30 had an overwhelming attendance of 11,000 spectators who enjoyed the finest in High School and University basketball. Some of the winners were:

High School Junior Varsity Boys: Silver Heights Huskies

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Wesmen Men’s Basketball team was looking to defend their University championship at the MTS Mobility Wesmen Classic. In the teams opening game the Wesmen defeated the RMC Paladins 85-57. The team got a solid team effort as four players scored in double figures led by Dan Shynkaryk with 18 points. The win against RMC set up a semi-final match up against the Waterloo Warriors. The Warriors dashed the hopes of a repeat championship by defeating the Wesmen 72-71. Matt Opalko had a strong game for the Wesmen finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The semi-final loss set up a third place showdown against Laval. It was a rough start for the Wesmen as they fell behind 52-18 at halftime and ended losing the contest 80-57 to finish in fourth place at the Classic. Matt Opalko was named to the tournament all-star team for his hard work throughout the Classic. The team will resume their Canada West regular season schedule this weekend when they travel to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team enjoyed the holiday break and are eager to get back to resuming their regular season schedule. The team will head to Edmonton this weekend to take on the University of Alberta Pandas in a two game series. The Wesmen sport a record of 7-3 and currently have the leading scorer in the CIS in Uzo Asagwara (24.4 ppg).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Men’s Volleyball Team ventured off to California for a pair of exhibition matches against tough NCAA division schools. On Friday night the Wesmen fell 3-0 to the UCLA Bruins (30-18, 30-25, and 31-29). Richard Wiebe and Ben Schellenberg led the team with 14 and 13 kills respectively. In Saturday’s match against California-Irvine the Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (30-26, 30-20, 30-19). Ben Schellenberg led the team with 12 kills. The team will resume their Canada West regular season schedule on Thursday against the Brandon Bobcats at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 7:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her squad were hard at work during the holidays preparing for the University of Toronto Invitational Tournament which will take place this weekend. The team has played well during the first half of the season as they have a record of 7-3 which places them in third in the Canada West standings.
