WESMEN OPEN LEA MARC ON WINNING NOTE
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the 2007 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a convincing 3-0 (28-26, 25-13, 25-22) victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues Friday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre. Fifth year player Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with 16 kills.Winnipeg Head Coach Diane Scott started a veteran line up in the first set one which saw Toronto hold slim 8-6 and 16-15 leads at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg rebounded and outscored Toronto 9-4 to take a 24-20 lead in the first set. The Varsity Blues were able to fight off four set points before Dirks put away two kills down the stretch to give Winnipeg a 28-26 opening set win. The Wesmen showed complete domination in the second set racing out to leads of 8-2 and 16-4 at the technical timeouts. First year middle Lauren Sears made her presence felt as she came up with three blocks in the set. Winnipeg went on to win the second set 25-13. The Varsity Blues put up a better effort in the third set, but Winnipeg was able to hold off the charge and a big block by Dirks gave Winnipeg the third and deciding set 25-22. Head Coach Diane Scott was pleased with the teams first match of the tournament. "We played all right", said Scott after the match. The Wesmen will next see action Saturday night at 8:00 p.m when they take on the Simon Fraser University Clan at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN REMAIN UNBEATEN WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN
The Winnipeg Wesmen remained unbeaten at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with an impressive 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-18) sweep against the Simon Fraser University Clan Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen capitalized on several Clan errorsin the first set holding leads of 8-6 and 16-8 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg went on a 4-0 run to widen the margin to 20-8 and eventually went on to win the first set 25-14. The duo of Nicola Dirks and Dayna Kiesman combined to score five of Winnipeg's first seven points in the second set as the Wesmen raced out to an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. The Wesmen werte able to widen their lead to 16-9 before once again taking advantage of three Simon Fraser service errors to win the second set 25-17. In the third set errors once again cost the Clan and Winnipeg continued their strong play with leads of 8-4 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. First year left side Christie Nairn came thru with two kills down the stretch to help Winnipeg take the third and deciding set 25-18. Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 10 kills and two service aces. Fourth year middle Dayna Kiesman had a strong match contributing seven kills and Christie Nairn, making her first ever CIS start had four kills and a service ace. Winnipeg improves to a perfect 2-0 thus far in the tournament. The Wesmen will play two back-to-back matches on Sunday. The Wesmen will face Regina at 10:00 a.m and Alberta at noon. Both matches will take place at the Duckworth Centre.

COUGARS HAND WINNIPEG FIRST LOSS OF TOURNAMENT
The Regina Cougars defeated the host Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-12, 25-9) Sunday morning at the 2007 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. The loss for the Wesmen was their first of the tournament. The first set was a close affair with both teams battling for every point. The Cougars won the first set 25-21. The Wesmen rebounded in the second set jumping out to the lead at both technical timeouts on their way to a 25-19 set win to even the match. Regina dominated the final two sets of the match winning 25-12 and closing out the match with a 25-9 fourth and final set win. Head Coach Diane Scott played a lot of her first year players in the match and was able to see the talent that they provide to the team. The Wesmen will close out the tournament against the unbeaten Alberta Pandas Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

WESMEN COME UP SHORT AGAINST PANDAS
The Winnipeg Wesmen put up a good fight but dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-10) decision to the defending National Champions, the Alberta Pandas at the 2007 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. The Wesmen playing their second match of the day, put up a good fight in the first half, keeping even with the Pandas throughout the first set. Alberta won the first set 25-22. In the second set Alberta once again had to hold off a determined Wesmen team and earn a hard fought 25-20 set win. The Wesmen seemed to run out of steam in the third set with the Pandas running away with a decisive 25-10 third and final set victory. The Wesmen finish the three day tournament with an even 2-2 record. The Panda's finished with a perfect 5-0 record to finish in first place in the eleven team field.
