The Wesmen Men's Volleyball gave the Trinty Western University Spartans all they could handle. The Spartans escaped with a hard fought 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 25-16, 18-25, 15-10) victory over the Wesmen on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. The defending CIS champions took the first set 25-23 against a determined Wesmen squad. In set number two Winnipeg battled back from being down at the technical timeouts to tie the score at 25-25 as Dustin Addison Schneider and first year Justin Duff came thru with a huge block to tie the score. The Wesmen took three of the next four points to take the second set 28-26. The Spartans showed their true championship form in set three as they dominated the set winning it by a score of 25-16.In the fourth set the Wesmen were not to be outdone as they raced out to leads of 8-5 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts opn their way to a 25-18 set victory. In the fifth and deciding set the Spartans grabbed an early lead and never looked back taking the decisive set 15-10. Ben Schellenberg was a force for the Wesmen finishing with a game high 23 kills. The two teams will meet Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN PUT IN BETTER EFFORT IN LOSS TO COUGARS

The Wesmen put in a better effort in their second match of the day at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. Despite the better effort the results were the same as the Wesmen were swept 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 27-25) by the Cougars. In thr first set the Wesmen held leads at both technical timeouts and received a great effort from Nicola Dirks, who had six kills but the Cougars prevailed taking the first set 25-23. In set number two Regina held leads of 8-3 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen closed the gap as strong blocking at the net and the 'Dynamic Duo" of Nicola Dirks and Marlee Bragg came thru with timely kills, but it was not enough as the Cougars won the second set 25-23. The Wesmen played like a desperate team in set number three as they held slim 8-6 and 16-13 leads at the timeouts. The Cougars and Wesmen exchanged points all the way to 25-25 when Regina took the next two points to win the set 27-25. The Wesmen finish day one of the tournament with a 0-2 record and they will face the Manitoba Bisons (2-0) on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN STRUGGLE IN OPENING MATCH LOSS

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) loss to the Brandon Bobcats. The Wesmen trailed 8-6 at the first technical  timeout of the first set but fought back to take a 16-14 lead at the second technical. Brandon rebounded and scored several key points on their way to a 25-21 opening set win. In the second set Brandon held the lead at both timeouts and were able to carry the play os they took the second set 25-22. In the third set the Wesmen fell behind early as the Bobcats raced out to leads of 8-3 and 16-7 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen went on a 5-0 run towards the end of the set but Brandon rebounded to win the third set 25-20.

wiebeWESMEN DEFEAT DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

The Wesmen Men's Volleyball Team continued their impressive pre-season play as they defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 28-26) in a highly entertaining match Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen came out on fire in the first set building leads of 8-4 and 16-7 at the technical timeouts. As the Spartans were keeping Ben Schellenberg, who had 23 kills the previous night off balance, Richard Wiebe and Marty Rochon took full advantage with timely kills to help the Wesmen to a 25-18 first set win. The Spartans held the lead at 16-14 in the second set before the Wesmen went on an 11-5 run to take the set 25-21. In the third set the Spartans showed their championship form as they held the lead for most of the set and eventually took the set 25-22 to get back into the match. The fourth set was close all along with both teams battling for every point. With the score tied at 24-24, Marty Rochon, who finished the match with six aces came thru with some great serves to help the Wesmen take the fourth and final set 28-26. Richard Wiebe finished with a match high 12 kills and Ryan DeBruyn contributed with nine kills. The men's team will next see action in two weeks when they travel to Regina to take part in the University of Regina Cougar Volleyball Challenge.

nicNICOLA DIRKS LEADS WESMEN TO BRONZE MEDAL GAME

Nicola Dirks took the Wesmen team on her shoulders and carried them to the bronze medal match at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. The Wesmen defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-21) to earn a spot in the bronze medal match. Dirks, in her fourth season finished with a match high 23 kills. The Wesmen started the first set strong as they had the lead at both technical timeouts. The Varsity Blues went on a 12-5 run after that to take the first set 25-21.In the second set Toronto carried the play and led the set 16-14 at the second technical. The Wesmen grabbed their first lead of the set at 18-17 and then dominated on their way to a 25-20 set win. In set number three the Wesmen started slowly but gained momentum in the latter stages of the set. the Wesmen leading 14-12 went on a 11-2 run to take the fourth set 25-14. In the fourth set Winnipeg battled back from being behind at both technical timeouts.After the second tehnical Nicola Dirks took over and single handidly gave the Wesmen the fourth set with a 25-21 match clinching set victory. The Wesmen will face Toronto for the bronze medal at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday morning at the Duckworth Centre.Manitoba and Regina will battle for the gold at 1:00 p.m.

WESMEN BEAT RIVAL BISONS FOR FIRST WIN OF TOURNAMENT

The Wesmen earned their first win of the Lea Marc Invitational with an impressive 3 -1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23) defeat against their cross town rivals the Manitoba Bisons. In the first set Winnipeg gained the early edge by taking an 8-3 lead at the first technical timeout. Third year middle Dayna Kiesman came up with four kills to carry the Wesmen to a 16-10 lead at the second technical. Nicola Dirks continued her impressive play  pounding home three kills down the stretch to carry the Wesmen to a 25-18 first set win. The Bisons carried the play early in the second set by racing out to a 6-0 lead before the Wesmen went on a 7-0 run of their own to close the gap to 8-7 for Manitoba at the first technical timeout. The Bisons held a slim 16-14 lead at the second technical timeout and eventually won the set 25-22. The third set was close all along with the Bisons holding a 8-7 lead at the first timeout and Winnipeg holding a 16-15 lead at the second timeout. The Wesmen held their ground and won the pivotal third set 25-20. In set number four the Bisons held a slim 8-6 lead and extended their lead to 16-10 at the second technical timeout. The Wesmen held their ground and went on a 10-4 run to even the score at 20-20. Nicola Dirks took control with three kills down the stretch to give the Wesmen a 25-23 match winning set. Dirks finished the match with 14 kills. The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 1-2, while the Bisons drop to 2-1. The Wesmen will face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues this evening at 6:00 p.m.

11:00 a.m. Bronze Medal Match - WESMEN vs Toronto

WESMEN CAPTURE BRONZE AT LEA MARC TOURNAMENT

The Wesmen played a solid match as they defeated the University of Toronto 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23) to win the bronze medal at the Lea Marc Marc Volleyball Challenge. The Wesmen held the lead for a majority of the first set with a combination of great offensive and defensive play to win the first set 25-21. In the second set the Wesmen held a slim 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout and expanded their lead to 16-8 at the second technical of the set. Toronto did manage to close the gap to 22-19 before the Wesmen attack closed out the set to win by a score of 25-21. In the third set the Wesmen got off to a rocky start and fell behind 8-5 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen were able to fight their way back to tie the score at 22-22. After a  key block by Marlee Bragg and Dayna Kiesman the Wesmen relied on back-to-back kills by Nicola Dirks to carry the team to a 25-23 set victory.
