SUCCESSFUL SPRING SEASON FOR JR. WESMEN PROGRAM

Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - The Jr. Wesmen Boys and Girls Basketball and Volleyball Club teams have had an incredible run of success over the past few weeks at both provincial and national tournaments and championships.

The Jr.Wesmen Strike 21U Boy’s Volleyball Team captured the silver medal at the National Championships held in Winnipeg last weekend. The team coached by Wesmen player Trevor Shaw, were defeated by the FOG Hi Bear Nation team from Edmonton in a thrilling five set gold medal match (25-16, 21-25, 21-25, 28-26, 20-18).

The Jr. Wesmen Girl's Volleyball 14U team finished in fourth place in the Division 2 side at the 14U Westerns Championship held this past weekend in Saskatoon. The Jr. Wesmen Girl's 14U "Red Diggers" volleyball team defended their Division "C" Provincial crown in April. This great result was a stepping stone going into the Western Championships. After two days of competition at the Western Championships the team carried a 5-1 record into the Division 2 championship round. They ended up losing a heartbreaking third set (15-13) in the semi-finals to a team from Calgary. Coaches Brenda Westwood and Bruce Boroski were extremely proud of their girls for their effort and team spirit! The Jr. Wesmen Red Diggers team members are Leesa Westwood, Emily Loewen, Cheyanne Derksen, Meghan McKee, Lauren Campbell, Caleigh Dobie, Kara Bodie, Kacie Olbrecht, Jessica Cymbaluk, Tia Boroski, Heather Dyck and Katie Lipinsky.

The Jr. Wesmen Boys Basketball teams also enjoyed success this spring. The Gr.10 Boys team defeated River East 91-79 to win the Juvenile A provincial Championship. The team also defeated the Gr.11 Jr. Wesmen team to win the Oak Park Invitational Tournament. The teams are now headed to tournaments in Minneapolis and Las Vegas this summer. The Gr.9 team defeated Swish with a thrilling come from behind 48-47 win to capture the Midget A Provincial Championship.

On the Girls side, the Jr. Wesmen Juvenile Girls team defeated the Jr.Bisons 67-63 to win the Juvenile A Provincial Championship. The Jr. Wesmen Midget Girls won the Midget A Provincial Championship with a 47-38 victory over the Jr. Bisons. The Jr. Wesmen Girls Youth Team won the silver medal in the Youth Girls A Championship dropping a 50-35 decision to the Jr. Bisons.
