2007 BOB FM SHOOTOUT TOURNAMENT RESULTS

amyT-WOLVES UPEND WESMEN IN BOB FM OPENER

The Lakehead University Thunderwolves used a solid first half to narrowly beat the Winnipeg Wesmen 55-54 in the opening game of the BOB FM Shootout Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Lakehead opened up a 33-21 lead at halftime on the Wesmen, who struggled from the field shooting a paltry 17% in the half. The Wesmen were able to find their game legs and played a much better second half and were even in a position to win the game. After the third quarter Winnipeg cut the Lakehead lead to 45-37 and had momentum on their side heading to fourth and final quarter. Third year guard Randie Gibson opened up the quarter with a deep three pointer to close the gap to five points at 45-40. The Wolves were able to keep the Wesmen attack at bay until first year guard Amy Ogidan sank a three pointer with two minutes remaining to give the Wesmen their first lead at 52-51. Jessica Stromberg was able to convert two free throws to give Winnipeg a one point lead at 54-53 with over one minute left to play. The Wolves were succesful on a 12 foot jumper with 41 seconds left to cap the victory. The Wesmen had two chances to win the game in the dying seconds but both shots were unsuccesfull. Kathryn Verboom led Lakehead with a game high 21 points and also hauled down 10 rebounds. Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 11 points. Jessica Stromberg had a double-double for the Wesmen finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Wesmen will take on the Regina Cougars tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. Lakehead will take on the Brandon Bobcats.

The Regina Cougars were never threatened as they defeated the Brandon Bobcats 84-37 at the BOB FM Shootout Friday night. The Cougars led 50-19 at halftime and never looked back outscoring the Bobcats 34-18 in the second half to cruise to the victory. Rebecca Schmidt led the Cougars with a game high 18 points. Megan Cherkas grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 10 points for a double-double. Tanysha Robinson led Brandon with nine points. Regina will fave Winnipeg Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Brandon Bobcats and the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.

goochGOOCH LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY AT BOB FM SHOOTOUT

Caitlin Gooch scored a game high 22 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 57-54 victory over the Regina Cougars Saturday night at the BOB FM shootout. Gooch, a second year guard drained five-three pointers and was all over the court grabbing six rebounds and coming away with five steals." She was simply amazing, what could you say", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay. The victory improves Winnipeg's record at the shootout to 1-1 and the loss drops Regina to 1-1 as well. The teams both struggled early on as the scored was deadlocked at 9-9 after a sluggish first quarter of play. The Wesmen scored 18 points, including ten by Gooch in the second quarter to take a 27-19 lead at halftime. Winnipeg came out firing in the third quarter sinking five three pointers, with Gooch adding three more and third year guard Randie Gibson adding a pair to extend Winnipeg's lead to 46-33 after three quarters. The Cougars were able to get back into the game in the fourth quarter outscoring Winnipeg 21-11, but the Wesmen were able to sink five-of-six free throws in the final 40 seconds to earn the victory. Jacquie Kenyon led Regina with a double-double scoring 18 points and hauling down 11 rebounds. Winnipeg will wrap the tournament against their provincial rivals, the Brandon Bobcats Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Regina will face Lakehead in the early game starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The Lakehead University Thunderwolves improved their record to 2-0 at the BOB FM Shootout after defeating the Brandon Bobcats 73-62 Saturday night. The Thunderwolves held a slim 39-35 lead at halftime against the stubborn Bobcats team, who played much better than in yesterday's defeat to the Regina Cougars. Tasia McKenna led Lakehead with 15 points. Jayla Bousquet paced Brandon with 14 points. Dayna Prost added four-three pointers for the Bobcats. Lakehead will close out the tournament against Regina at 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The Bobcats will face the host Winnipeg Wesmen at 1:00 p.m.

The Regina Cougars turned a close game into a one-seided affair as they defeated the Lakehead University Thunderwolves 73-47 Sunday afternnon. The game was tied at 19-19 after one quarter, but the Cougars outscored the Wolves 14-2 in the second quarter to turn the game's outcome into their favour. The Cougars led 33-21 at halftime. Second year forward Gabrielle Gheyssen led Regina with 16 points. Kathryn Verbbom added eight points to lead the Wolves. Megan Cherkas of Regina was named both a tournament all-star and top defensive player of the tournament. Jacquie Kenyon also of Regina was named to the al-star team as well. Tashia McKenna was the Lakehead player chosen as an all star.

rosemaryWESMEN CONCLUDE BOB FM SHOOTOUT ON A WINNING NOTE

The Winnipeg Wesmen wrapped up the 2007 BOB FM Shootout with a 77-64 victory over the Brandon Bobcats Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen used a total team effort in the victory with three players scoring in double digits. First year guard Rosemary Mills led the way with 20 points, followed by fellow first year Amy Ogidan's 15 points and eight rebounds. Caitlin Gooch, the star of last night's game against Regina finished with 11 points. The Bobcats were led by the duo of Allie Butz who led the team with a game high 22 points, including six three pointers and Dayna Prost, who finished with 16 points, including five three pointers. The Bobcats did put a scare into the Wesmen by pulling out to a 21-15 lead after an entertaining opening quarter. Winnipeg mounted a comeback in the second quarter and were able to grab the lead once and for all at the three minute mark of the second quarter by a score of 24-23. The teams exchanged baskets down the stretch as Winnipeg held a slim 41-39 lead at halftime. The Wesmen opened up the third quarter on a 11-0 run and were able to extend their lead to 60-49 after three quarters. Brandon tried to mount a comeback innthe fourth quarter but a determined Wesmen team kept the lead in double digits to earn their second victory of the tournament. Winnipeg finishes the tournament with a record of 2-1. A much improved Brandon team finishes with a 0-3 record.
