2006 BOB FM SHOOTOUT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT RESULTS

LAKEHEAD UPSET WESMEN IN BOB FM OPENER

The Lakehead University Thunderwolves used a solid second half to propel them to a 72-65 upset victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in the opening game of the BOB Fm Shootout Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Lakehead scored 29 points in the third quarter tomopen up an 11 point lead that the Wesmen were not able to overcome. The game started out slowly for the teams as this was the first pre-season action for both teams. Lakehead held an 18-11 lead after the first quarter. The Wesmen got their game legs going in the second quarter scoring as they outscored the T-Wolves 23-13 to take a slim 34-31 lead at halftime. In the third quarter Lakehead took advantage of several Wesmen turnovers and missed opportunities as they scored 29 points, including four-three pointers all within the first five minutes of play to grab a 60-49 lead after three quarters. The Wesmen did come to within two points of the T-Wolves in the fourth quarter but were unable to pull ahead. Fifth year guard Uzo Asagwara scored 17 points to lead the Wesmen. First year guard Tasia McKenna led Lakehead with 15 points. The Wesmen will take on the University of Calgary Dino's Saturday night and Lakehead will take on the Ottawa Gee-Gee's.

The Ottawa Gee-Gee's overcame a 24 point third quarter defecit to defeat the University of Calgary Dinos 72-71 in overtime at the BOB FM Shootout Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Dinos were ahead 32-22 at halftime. Kyrie Love led the Gee-Gee's with 14 points and Lindsay Maundrell led Calgary with 22 points.

randieWESMEN OVERCOME SLOW START TO DEFEAT DINOS AT BOB FM SHOOTOUT

The Winnipeg Wesmen overcame a slow start to defeat the University of Calgary Dinos 76-73 Saturday night at the BOB FM Shootout. Fourth year forward Stefenie Timmersman drained a clutch two point shot with 22 seconds left to secure the win. The Wesmen had their share of troubles in the first quarter, including having star guard Uzo Asagwara in foul trouble after picking up three fouls and kept off the scoresheet in the quarter. Solid play from Jenny Ezirim and Randie Gibson helped the Wesmen pull even at 17-17 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Dinos continued to carry the play to the Wesmen, but once again Gibson, who scored two-three pointers in the quarter and Ezirim, who had two steals which led to back-to0back baskets kept the Wesmen in the game with Calgary leading 34-30 at halftime. In the third quarter Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay relied on her veterans to carry the team. The Wesmen played a more determined  style of basketball as they were able to pull ahead by a score aof 49-46. The Dinos would not let up as they went on a 13-6 run towards the end of quarter to take a 59-55 lead after three quarters. The Wesmen used the three point shot, two from Jessica Stromberg and one Randie Gibson to overtake Calgary for the victory. Jenny Ezirim had a double-double in the game scoring a team high 15 points amd adding 12 assists. Randie Gibson had 14 points, including four-three pointers. Jane Meadwell led Calgary with a game-high 23 points including going 4-for-7 from three point territory. Tne Wesmen will face the Ottawa Gee-Gee's Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Calgary Dinos will face Lakehead at 11:00 p.m.

The Ottawa Gee-Gee's defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 54-52 Saturday night for their second victory at the BOB FM Shootout. The Gee-Gee's had a slim 25-23 lead at halftime. Second year guard Kyrie Love led Ottawa with 14 points. Third year guard Debra Sandberg led Lakehead scoring 13 points. Lakehead will face the Calgary Dinos at 11:00 a.m. and Ottawa will battle the host Winnipeg Wesmen at 1:00 p.m on Sunday as the BOB FM Shootout wraps up.

The University of Calgary Dinos got their first win of the BOB FM Shootout with a 73-62 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Calgary held a 10 point lead at halftime 31-21. Tournament all-star Lindsay Maundrell led the Dinos with a game-high 23 points. Kathryn Verboom, also named an all-star chipped in 14 points in a losing cause to lead Lakehead. Lakehead and Calgary both finish the tournament with identical 1-2 records.

jennyWESMEN DOMINATING IN VICTORY OVER OTTAWA AT BOB FM SHOOTOUT

The Winnipeg Wesmen dominated from start to finish as they rolled over the Ottawa Gee-Gee's 74-42 in the concluding game Sunday afternoon at the BOB FM Shootout at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen had complete control in the first half as they took a commanding 19-7 lead after the first quarter. Ottawa was a paltry 2-for-15 from the field in the quarter. In the second quarter the Wesmen did not let up and backed by three point shots by Uzo Asagwara, Caitlin Gooch and Randie Gibson, Winnipeg was able to jump out to a 42-14 lead at halftime. The Gee-Gee's showed some life at the start of the third quarter as they went on a 9-0 run to cut the Wesmen lead to 42-23. After the little spurt by Ottawa, the Wesmen were able to settle down and led 50-33 after three quarters. The Wesmen dominated the fourth quarter outscoring Ottawa 24-9 to cruise to the victory. Uzo Asagwara led the Wesmen with a game-high 23 points. Tina Ethier was the top scorer for Ottawa with eight points. The Wesmen finish the BOB FM tournament with a 2-1 record. The Gee-Gee's also finish with a 2-1 record.
