Summer Institute in
Infectious Diseases 2005

IMPACTS OF
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
ON LOCAL + GLOBAL COMMUNITIES

Monday, May 30 – Friday, June 3, 2005

Background:

An intensive one-week course, the Summer Institute has been designed specifically for students, professionals, and community members. Winnipeg is leading the way for Canada on infectious disease science and research. This community boasts tremendous physical assets like the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health. It is also home to some of the most respected and cutting-edge scientists and academics in the world who have demonstrated global leadership in combating the most destructive diseases of our time.

The University of Winnipeg’s Global College and its partners, the International Centre for Infectious Diseases, the University of Manitoba, and the Public Health Agency of Canada, have created the Summer Institute to provide participants with access to the facilities and expertise that make Winnipeg a global leader in this field. The course is being offered as a summer institute to maximize participation of these experts.

The intensive course is designed to advance knowledge about infectious diseases and the potential impact they can have on our local and global communities. With mosquito season just around the corner and news reports of pandemic influenza and soaring rates of HIV/AIDS, participants will realize the currency of the course material in society today. The institute will be of interest to students in Biology, Chemistry, and the Social Sciences, as well as those individuals already involved in health care and related professions.

For students, the Summer Institute on the Impacts of Infections Diseases on Local + Global Communities is a three credit hour course and is cross-listed with Biology and Biochemistry. Those taking the course for professional development (and not credit) will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course. Limited spaces have been reserved for interested community members who wish to attend the course (non-credit).
