Applying for Admission

All applications are submitted to, and processed by, the Admissions Office. Students who wish to apply for admission should consult the Admissions section of the University of Winnipeg's website. This section includes the online application form, as well as detailed information on the specific documents and fees that students must submit along with their application forms.

Students applying to Stream C must include additional documents with their application. These are outlined below:

Applying for admission to the U of W 

• All applications to the Developmental Studies Program are submitted to, and processed by, the Admissions Office. Applications are submitted online. 

How to Apply

• Students who have been previously enrolled at UW and are returning after more than a one year absence must complete a Continuance form.

Applying for admission into Stream C of the Developmental Studies Program

Upon completing and submitting the UW Application Form, students planning to enroll in the Child Development and Child Care stream of the Developmental Studies Program—Stream C—must also apply to be admitted into this Program. This application consists of the following components:

1. A completed Developmental Studies Program Application Form.

2. Two letters of reference, one of which must be from an employer, a supervisor, or colleague in an employment or a volunteer position;

3. An autobiography, no longer than 4 standard pages, with 1.5 line spacing, which addresses the applicant’s;

  •  Personal background and motivation for entering the childcare field;
  •  Academic profile, including strengths and weaknesses;
  •  Work experience, outlining jobs held and involvement in any organizations and associations;
  •  Special abilities or interests in the arts, languages, athletics, etc.; and
  •  Academic and professional goals, indicating whether studies will be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis.

4. Diploma entry applicants must submit the original ECE II Diploma (and ECE III), if applicable and available.

The application form and attachments are submitted to the UW Admissions office, and a photocopy is forwarded to the Developmental Studies office for review. After the completion of the review process, Admission Office is notified by the Director of the Developmental Studies program if the applicant is accepted into the program. Students will receive an official acceptance letter from the Admission Office. 

Applying for Spring Practicum at Red River College in Year 2 

Note: This only applies to applicants entering directly entering from high school or the work force or transferring from another faculty or program.

In order to apply for the spring practicum, which takes place in the spring of Year 2, students first have to apply for general admission to Red River College (RRC) for their full-time Year 3 program. Admission to RRC indicates that the student is eligible for the spring practicum. Registration is ongoing and students may register at any time (online, mail, or in-person). The registration fee is $95 fee. An official transcript must be supplied. 

  • Students should apply by the end of January, as placements are completed in February.
  • Students must indicate that they are in the Developmental Studies program - Stream C at the University of Winnipeg.
  • After the application has been submitted, students receive an information package from RRC.
  • Students must contact the Practicum Coordinator at RRC: Chihiro Jung at cjung2@rrc.ca.

Applying for Year 3 (Full-time) at Red River College

 • At the conclusion of this year, students will have earned an ECE II Diploma by having completed the second year of the two-year ECE program. The Diploma must be submitted to the UW Admissions and a copy to the Developmental Studies office for verification of the completion of their RRC program and transfer credits towards their BA degree.
