Improving education for children across Manitoba

Dr. Sheri-Lynn Skwarchuk’s internationally-recognized research into cognitive development has improved education and learning outcomes for children across Manitoba.

Skwarchuk graduated from The University of Winnipeg with a BA (Hons.) in psychology before going on to complete her MA and PhD at the University of Waterloo. In 2003, she returned to her alma mater to teach in the Faculty of Education.

Her impacts on education have affected teaching techniques in the home and at school. Skwarchuk’s research into home numeracy and children’s mathematical cognition and development, has helped identify parenting practice for young children that can lead to better math outcomes at school.

Her focus on early-years education has also led Skwarchuk to advocate for better resources and funding for local and provincial pre-school programs.

In addition to teaching at UWinnipeg, Skwarchuk continues to work in school psychology by providing training and consultation services to rural school divisions. Her influential work with the Manitoba Rural Learning Consortium has helped create better psychological supports for students with special learning needs.
