Sharing a love of politics

Dr. Allen Mills is a political author, researcher, and professor in the Department of Political Sciences. He has taught and mentored generations of students and colleagues throughout his 40-year career at UWinnipeg.

Mills is an active member of the research community at UWinnipeg, as well as locally and internationally. His research interests include Canadian politics, Canadian socialism and liberalism, Eastern Europe, Charles Taylor, Will Kymlicka, and Pierre Elliott Trudeau. His first major work was a biography of James Shaver Woodsworth, the first leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. From 2004 to 2007, he was editor of the government and politics entries for The Encyclopedia of Manitoba, which was published in November 2007. In 2016, he released his book on Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Citizen Trudeau, 1944-1965: An Intellectual Biography.

Mills gives lectures and conferences regularly, and attends panels and round table discussions on politics, literature, and culture. He was visiting fellow at the University of Edinburgh in 1992, and visiting lecturer in Canadian studies at Charles University in Prague the same year. He has also given numerous interviews about Canadian and Manitoban politics, and was a regular book reviewer for the Winnipeg Free Press for nearly 30 years.
